World faces condom shortfall due to coronavirus

A global shortage of condoms is looming, the world's biggest producer said, after a coronavirus lockdown forced it to shut down production.

Couples who are quarantining together may soon find themselves rationing more than just food and Netflix shows.... Karex, the world’s largest condom maker, warned Friday, there soon could be a global shortage of condoms after it had to shut down production with employees unable to come to work.

The Malaysian-based company makes one out of every five condoms used in the world, under brand names such as Carex.

It has not produced a single condom in more than a week, which means there are 100 million fewer condoms available for shipment.

The shortfall could have a devastating effect on humanitarian agencies around the world who distribute condoms as a tool for HIV-prevention.
