Older patient heroically leaves Las Vegas hospital after beating coronavirus

This is the heartwarming moment a patient in his 60s leaves hospital three weeks after being admitted with severe coronavirus symptoms - and being saved by a quick-thinking doctor at a Las Vegas, Nevada hospital on Wednesday (April 8).

The man, named only as Alfred, was rushed to the Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on March 23.

He was put on a ventilator and came close to losing his fight with the Covid-19 virus after suddenly deteriorating.

However, Dr. Christopher Voscopoulos, tried a rescue treatment called ‘proning’ which flips a patient onto their stomach.

This relieves the pressure that the heart, which is full of blood, is placing on the lungs that are already weakened by the virus.

Dr. Voscopoulos, the medical director for the intensive care unit (ICU) told local media that ''when a patient like Alfred is lying on his back, the heart puts pressure on the lungs''.

The medic said he realised Alfred's weakness and flipped him onto his front to ''relieve some of that pressure and allow for more lung function''.

Uplifting footage shows how doctors and nurses lined the corridor as Alfred was wheeled out after three weeks of treatment.

He was strong enough to wave and thank those who saved his life and ''giving him a second chance''.

CEO of Southern Hills Hospital, Alexis Mussi, said: ''Our critical care team worked tirelessly to save Alfred’s life and it was so special for them to see him leave our hospital and be able to say goodbye.''
