In view of the recent attacks on health workers in the country, Modi government has passed an ordinance making such acts cognizable and non-bailable.
People guilty of attacking healthcare workers now face a jail term up to 7 years.
There are also provisions to provide compensation for injury to healthcare service personnel or causing damage or loss to the property.
The announcement came hours after Home Minister Amit Shah held a meeting with representative of the Indian Medical Association.
The question though is will the tough measures act as a deterrent?
