Amid Covid crisis, African Swine Fever challenge for Assam; 14,000 pigs dead

Amid Covid-19 pandemic, another disease has put Assam on alert.

An outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) has killed over 14,000 pigs so far.

China faced ASF outbreak in September 2019, leading to large-scale pig culling.

ASF is a severe, highly contagious disease for pigs, but doesn't affect humans.

ASF can be spread by live or dead pigs, domestic or wild, & pork products.

Alert in North East which does pork business worth Rs 8,000-10,000 crore annually.

Assam administration has decided against culling of pigs for now.

Kaziranga Park has dug trenches so wild boars stay away and don't get infected.
