HONOR FLIGHT CANCELS 2020 TRIPS

More and more organizations are finding it difficult to plan for long- standing traditions -- even in late 20-20 joining us now is diane shaw with honor flight of southern indiana.

Diane -- the board had to make a very difficult decision.

-- after learning the spring honor flight would need to be postponed for a second time since this pandemic hit.

"yes, the national honor flight network made the call to postpone all flights until after august 31st.

So our board met last night on a video call and made the decision to suspend all flights for 2020.

It was a hard decision, but we felt it was the right one for the safety of our veterans."

What does that mean going forward?

Evv12 was originally scheduled for may 2nd then pushed back to august 22nd and is now pushed to 2012 -- along with evv13 which would have taken place in october.

"the veterans who were selected for evv12 will be getting a call from their bus captains letting them know that the flight has been canceled.

They will be on our next flight when it is schedule in 2021.

The veterans who would have been on evv13, that flight will hopefully happen in october of next year."

As you mentioned, it was the right decision for the safety of our veterans, but how hard is it knowing you are missing out on an entire year to giving these veterans -- what many call a trip of a lifetime.

"it is very hard, but we know we are not the only hub having to make this call.

More than 25 other hubs across the country are suspending flights for 2020."

How can the community continue to help honor flight - and let veterans know we are still thinking of them even though we can't reach out in many of the ways we are use to.

"if you know a veteran, reach out and give them a call or send them a letter.

You can also still help hfsi.

If a veteran has not yet signed up for their flight, we are still taking applications on our website.

We will fly again and when it is safe, we will be taking veterans back to d.c.

We are still also accepting donations and mail call."
