Hundreds of residents evacuated after floods in Malaysia

More than 700 people were evacuated from their homes after a massive flood submerges major parts of Johor state in Malaysia on July 13 evening.

Hundreds of desperate families are now housed at 10 evacuation centres across the region.

Footage taken in Muar which in one of the most badly-hit districts by the flash flood shows properties submerged in murky water.

State Health and Environment Committee chairman R.

Vidyananthan said the flood was caused by incessant heavy rains.

He said: "The families will stay at the centers until the flood is gone.

Positive thing is that the water level is already decreasing since this morning." Flash floods have hit several countries in Southeast Asia including Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia.

The region is currently experiencing its annual rainy season which lasts until September or October and sees strong downpours throughout the week.
