Devotees performed rituals in West Bengal's Kolkata on the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti. They took holy dip in Hoogly River on January 14. On the other side, devotees also took holy dip in Ganga River on the occasion of Makar Sankranti today. People came in large numbers to perform the rituals in UP's Varanasi.
Despite of freezing temperature, devotees took holy dip in river Ganga. Dense fog had covered the area leading to minimum visibility but nothing could stop these devotees from offering their prayers. One of the devotees said, "I come here daily to take dip in river Ganga and no matter how cold the weather is, we come regularly."
As the northern India is reeling under severe cold, normal lives hit out of gear. Uttar Pradesh's Moradabad witnessed low visibility as dense fog engulfed the city on January 25. People are facing hard times in cold weather. Locals lit bonfires to keep themselves warm. Similarly, fog blanketed Kanpur leading to low visibility. According to IMD, minimum temperature hovers around 9 degree Celsius. People of Varanasi are reeling under severe cold. The district recorded 25 m visibility at 5:30 am today. Intense cold weather conditions are disrupting the normal lives.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with beneficiaries and vaccinators of COVID-19 vaccination drive in Varanasi, via video conferencing. A 65-year-old woman, who was in Pakistan jail, returned to India after 18 years. Hasina Begum had gone to Pakistan to meet her husband's relatives but landed up in a Pakistani jail after she lost her passport. She returned to India on Tuesday after Aurangabad police filed a report on the matter. She was received by her relatives and Aurangabad police officials upon her return. According to the information received from the police, Begum who is a resident of Rashidpura area under the City Chowk police station limits in Aurangabad is married to Dilshad Ahmed who is a resident of Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur. Pakistan released Begum last week and handed her over to Indian authorities.

Speaking on the violent incidences during farmers' tractor parade on Republic Day in national capital, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on January 26 said nobody will support whatever happened today but the reason behind it cannot be ignored either, and Centre didn't fulfil its responsibility. Dense fog enveloped Prayagraj city of Uttar Pradesh on January 22. It led to low visibility at various locations. Similar situation of fog was also observed in Punjab's Amritsar today. It has disrupted normal life of the locals in city. A thick blanket of dense fog also engulfed UP's Lucknow.
