Equity benchmark indices began the new calendar year with a positive tone as investors hoped for progress on Covid-19 vaccines globally amid signs of a nascent economic recovery in the country.
The BSE SandP Sensex closed 118 points or 0.25 per cent higher at 47,869 while the Nifty 50 edged higher by 37 points or 0.26 per cent to 14,019.
Among stocks, Adani Ports was the top gainer by moving up 4.4 per cent to Rs 505 per share.
Mahindra and Mahindra gained by 1.5 per cent to Rs 731.80 per share after called off talks with Ford for a joint venture.
Punjab National Bank advanced by 5.3 per cent, State Bank of India by 1.5 per cent, Tata Consultancy Services by 2.4 per cent and Tata Motors by 1.4 per cent.
However, those in the negative terrain were ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, SBI Life, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Hindalco, Titan, NTPC and Hero MotoCorp.
Meanwhile, US markets ended higher a day earlier after the release of better-than-expected macroeconomic data and optimism on the Covid19 vaccine front.
Market pressure persisted for the third consecutive session as key indices, including Sensex, Nifty, and Nifty Bank, witnessed notable declines. The midcap index closed in the red despite performing relatively better. Geopolitical tensions between Iran and Israel contributed to the market downturn. US stock futures dipped after major benchmarks suffered losses, while European and Asia-Pacific markets also experienced significant drops.

The Supreme Court dismissed the State Bank of India's plea for an extension to disclose electoral bond details, directing disclosure by March 12, 2024. This decision follows the court's ruling against the 2018 electoral bond scheme changes. SBI's confusion over matching exercises was clarified by the Chief Justice, emphasising the need for plain disclosure. Contempt proceedings may ensue if directives are not followed.

RBI's action against Paytm and Kotak Mahindra Bank for non-compliance raised concerns. Kotak Mahindra's failure to meet data storage requirements led to RBI directives. Similar actions were taken against HDFC Bank in 2020. The events underscore the need for stronger regulatory mechanisms.

Ford Orders Recall , Over Potential SUV Gas Leak.
ABC reports that Ford has ordered
a recall for almost 43,000 small SUVs
due to a potential risk of fire. .
The recall impacts some Bronco
Sport SUVs from 2022 and 2023,
as well as 2022's Escape SUVs. .
According to Ford, gasoline can leak from
fuel injectors near or onto hot engine surfaces,
which increases the risk of starting fires.
The recall does not reportedly include repairing
any potential fuel leak, which the company
claims only impacts about 1% of their SUVs.
ABC reports that Michael Brooks, executive director
of the nonprofit Center for Auto Safety,
has called Ford's decision a "Band-aid type recall.".
Brooks claims that even a 1% failure
rate is high and places drivers
at potential risk for a crash.
The NHTSA said that it lacks legal
authority to pre-approve recall fixes. .
The agency added that it would, "closely track their performance using field data.".
However, Brooks suggests that Congress
needs to change laws so that the NHTSA can , "require something more than the rubber
stamp that NHTSA is currently deploying.”.
That is a post-remedy inquiry
that won't make the fixes better,
and further stretches out the process
and leaves consumers in limbo. , Michael Brooks, executive director of the
nonprofit Center for Auto Safety, via ABC

Law Enforcement Hiring , Increased in 2023 , Following Years of Decline.
NBC reports that police departments in the United States
have seen their first increase in ranks, changing course
on a historic exodus of officers in recent years.
According to a recent survey,
2023 saw more officers sworn in
than any of the previous four years. .
At the same time, the survey by the Police Executive
Research Forum (PERF) also found that fewer law
enforcement officers resigned or retired in 2023. .
Law enforcement numbers had been declining following
the COVID pandemic and nationwide protests against
police brutality following the death of George Floyd. .
Law enforcement numbers had been declining following
the COVID pandemic and nationwide protests against
police brutality following the death of George Floyd. .
I just think that the past four
years have been particularly
challenging for American policing.
And our survey shows we’re
finally starting to turn a corner, Chuck Wexler, Executive director of PERF, via NBC.
NBC reports that declining numbers left
many police departments with a shortage of
officers, which resulted in slower response times.
Chuck Wexler, executive director of PERF, warns that many police departments are still struggling to recruit and retain officers.
According to Wexler, law enforcement , "isn't out of the woods yet.".
At least a dozen smaller police departments in
the nation have been forced to disband, leaving those
municipalities reliant upon state or county police forces.
NBC reports that in addition to increased pay and
benefits, many police departments have chosen to
change application requirements to increase hiring
