India began its eighth tenure as a non-permanent member in the United Nations Security Council on 4th January, 2021.

Speaking at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting, Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of India's Mission to UN, Nagaraj Naidu said, "Funding gap of billion-dollar deserves immediate attention. We have taken positive note of activities of UNMISS in implementing its mandate. Mission should continue supporting South Sudan police forces in ensuring safety and security of camps."

'Recent diplomatic efforts to revive the stalled peace talks are encouraging'. India also acknowledged Egypt's efforts in facilitating the Cairo agreement. India is in the process of sending another batch of medicines as a grant to the Palestinian people. It will facilitate an early supply of Made in India vaccines to Palestine. At UNSC meet on Somalia, India condemned frequent terror attacks by Al-Shabaab. It said that Somali security forces and institutions need continued support to tackle Al Shabaab and other armed groups. India asked for transition of security from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) to Somali security forces, keeping in mind ground realities.
22 women police are being trained for anti-terrorism and other operations. After training, the commandos will be a part of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). The commandos for women police force are being trained with combat skills for anti-terrorism operations. The training kicked-off at Police training college in Uttarakhand’s Narendra Nagar. “In this project, we are training our women police commando force. After completion of the training, they will be part of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) team. 22 women cops are currently being trained under this project. They are being taught combating skills for anti-terrorism operations,” said R Swarup, Director of Police Training College, Narendra Nagar. Watch the full video for more.

Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, who is on a 2-day visit to Russia, said that President Putin has accepted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s invitation to visit India. He also added that relations between India and Russia are at a good place. Shringla called on Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and held talks with Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov. Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said that India-Russia relation is in a good place. On his 2-day visit to Russia, Shringla said, "India-Russia relation is in a good place. We have a very good understanding on issues that are beyond bilateral -- regional and global. The friendship and cooperation that our two countries enjoy will see us going higher and further in years to come." Shringla said that BRICS completed 15 years of its existence and it's a very important landmark. The Foreign Secretary had a meeting with number of dignitaries including Russian academics and strategic thinkers on India-Russia relationship.

It welcomed the announcement of Palestinian elections. Expressed support for President Abbas' call to hold an international peace conference. Ambassador Tirumurti announced India's pledge of US $150,000 for peace building. India also expressed its commitment to support Libya for peace and stability. It said there is no military solution to the conflict. India also raised concern over terror outfits using pandemic to ramp up recruitment. India took part at the UNSC Arria Formula meeting on children and armed conflict. It highlighted that for terror groups, children are most susceptible to manipulation whether as active participants in terror or as human shields to protect the perpetrators of terror. The children are increasingly the target of coercion, both physical and mental.
India at the United Nations has pushed for global peace and end of violence. It slammed Pakistan and urged the UN to safeguard religious sites the world over. In December 2020, a historic Hindu temple in Karak was attacked and set on fire. India also raised a terrorist attack at Sikh gurudwaras in Kabul in March 2020. At the UNSC meet on Columbia, India appreciated the remarkable progress in the peace building process. It applauded the efforts of the people and Govt. of Columbia in realizing the achievements of the last 4 years. India gave suggestions for implementing the peace agreement. India also participated at the UNSC meeting on the Central African Republic (CAR). lt condemned constant violence in the landlocked country in Central Africa. In CAR, the immediate and pressing priority is early restoration of peace and stability. At the UNSC meeting on Syria, India showed concern over deteriorating security situation. Hostilities in Syria other than the Northwest part, have continued unabated. Ambassador Tirumurti calls on the international community to provide immediate assistance alleviate humanitarian sufferings, rebuilding infrastructure and safeguarding livelihoods in Syria.
