An 84-year-old man in Shivamogga has been passionately working towards preserving his love for mangoes. An octogenarian, BV Subba Rao Hegde has identified and preserved over 100 varieties of mangoes in his small backyard. His passion came due to his intense craze for mango pickles. BV Subba Rao visited around 16 villages of Western Ghats to collects the local varieties of appe midi. Appe midi is a term for the mangoes used for pickle. He was felicitated with 'Award of Excellence' for innovative farming at National Horticulture fair 2021, held at Hesaraghatta in Bengaluru on February 08.
Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait suggested farmers in Karnataka should organise a protest in the state similar to that of Delhi and gherao Bengaluru from all sides. Addressing a farmers' meeting in Shivamogga on Saturday, Tikait said a strategy has been made to snatch farmers' land in the state. He said, “You need to make a 'Delhi' in Bengaluru. You need to gherao Bengaluru (like Delhi) from all sides and people will come and join your protest. "This fight will go on for a long. We need to start such protest in every city until these 3 black laws are taken back and the law on MSP is not brought. You need to run a protest in Karnataka. Bhartiya Kisan Union National spokesperson Rakesh Tikait said that conspiracy is being hatched to snatch away land from farmers. He said that many more laws will be passed to make it impossible for common people and farmers to buy milk, electricity, seeds and pesticides. "A big conspiracy is being hatched to snatch away land from farmers. Big corporates are in search of your land. Youths will be unemployed if land is grabbed from farmers. Farmers will be given loans through Kisan Credit Cards taking land as collateral. When you fail to repay the loan, they will take away your land," he said.
