'New START': Putin suspends last remaining nuclear treaty with USA | Explainer| Oneindia News
After Joe Biden took the world by surprise by visiting Ukraine this Monday morning…Tuesday was the turn of Vladimir Putin.
In his 2 hours long state-of-the-nation address, the Russian President minced no words in criticising the West..and blaming them for the imbroglio in the war with Ukraine.
He also did not hesitate in accusing Ukraine’s leaders of taking the country’s population “hostage” and added that Kyiv is “serving the interests of foreign powers”.
But in this two hour long address, the one thing that stood out was his declaration of suspension of a treaty that puts restrictions on nuclear arms weapons.
Together, the US and Russia own 90% of the world’s nuclear weapons.
The name of this treaty is “new START”.

Russia Vetoes UN Resolution , to Prevent Nukes in Space.
The resolution was sponsored
by Japan and the United States.
It called on all nations to refrain from developing or deploying nuclear weapons "or other weapons of mass destruction in space," 'The Guardian' reports. .
A 1967 international treaty
already bans such weapons in space.
Russia’s U.N. Ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia,
vetoed the resolution, calling it "absolutely absurd and politicized," as well as a "dirty spectacle.".
China abstained from voting, while the rest of the 15-member council voted in favor of the resolution. .

Russia and China would rather establish an
amendment calling on all nations "to prevent for
all time the placement of weapons in outer space, and the threat of use of force in outer spaces.".

weapons of any kind in outer space, not
just WMDs [weapons of mass destruction].

Nebenzia went on to say, "if we recall that the U.S. and their allies announced some time ago plans to place weapons … in outer space.".
The U.S.-Japan resolution was announced in March after it was determined that Russia was in possession of "a 'troubling' anti-satellite weapon capability," 'The Guardian' reports.
However, earlier this year, Putin said, , "Our position is clear and transparent: We have always been categorically against and are now against the deployment of nuclear weapons in space."

The disaster at Chernobyl, located about 65 miles from Kiev in the former Soviet Union, is the worst nuclear power plant accident to date.
50 tons of radioactive material was released into the atmosphere after an explosion of the Number 4 reactor, caused by an engineering experiment.
The 30,000 residents of
the nearby community of
Pripyat were evacuated the next day.
The Soviet government
attempted a cover-up.
But two days after the disaster, radiation levels
800 miles away in Sweden were detected at
40% higher than the normal level.
32 people were initially
killed in the Chernobyl plant.
5,000 Soviets eventually died
from radiation-induced illnesses.
Millions of acres of forest
and farmland across Northern
and Eastern Europe were contaminated.
The former residents of
Pripyat have never returned
