Days after claiming full control of the war-ravaged city of Bakhmut, Russia’s Wagner mercenary group has started withdrawing fighters from the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, leader Yevgeny Prigozhin said. "We are withdrawing the units from Bakhmut. From today at five in the morning, May 25 until June 1, most of the units will rebase to camps in the rear. We are handing our positions to the military," Prigozhin announced.

Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick says net migration is “far too high” after newly published figures for 2022 showed around 606,000 more people are estimated to have moved to the UK than have left. The Office for National Statistics said factors contributing to relatively high levels of immigration over the past 18 months include people coming to the UK from non-EU countries for work, study, and for humanitarian purposes, including those arriving from Ukraine and Hong Kong. The overnight drone attacks on Kyiv by the Russian forces don’t seem to stop at all. Last night too, Russian forces carried out overnight drone attacks on Kyiv…continuing a month-long campaign of air strikes against the Ukrainian capital. The top echelons of the Ukrainian military said that Kyiv's air defences destroyed all of the drones during the three-hour air attack last night. This was the twelfth drone attack by Russia this month. The attacks were carried out using Iranian-made Shahed drones, or what the Russian call Kamikaze drones. Serhiy Popko, head of the Kyiv’s military administratio, said that all detected air targets moving in the direction of Kyiv were destroyed” .
In a major development, Russia has accused Kyiv of carrying ot cross-border sabotage in the Belgorod region. Kyiv has denied these accusations by saying that the groups responsible for the attacks don’t follow their orders…and they act on their own. Two groups have claimed responsibility for this cross-border raids….The Freedom of Russia Legion…and the Russian Volunteer Corps. Both have said that they had carried out the attacks and liberated a settlement in the region. The Free Russia legion was formed in March 2022. Reportedly, its first members were soldiers who had defected from the Russian military shortly after Moscow launched its massive, unprovoked Ukrainian invasion on February 24 last year. In their manifesto, they describe themselves as free citizens of Russia who take responsibility for themselves and are beginning to fight for a New Russia. The exact number of fighters in the organization is still a secret, but it is speculated that figures are as high as up to 4,000.
A group of anti-Putin Russian nationals – who are aligned with the Ukrainian army – has claimed responsibility for an attack in Russian’s southwestern region of Belgorod…as Moscow said it was fighting a group of saboteurs there. Shelling damaged an administrative building, several residential buildings, and a kindergarten in the area, according to Belgorod’s regional governor who said there were no fatalities. In a Telegram post, groups calling themselves the “Freedom of Russia Legion” and “Russian Volunteer Corps” said they had “liberated” a settlement in the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine. Ukraine has disavowed connection to the Russian partisan fighters, saying that they act independently and are not subject to military control. The Freedom of Russia Legion, which describes itself as an anti-Kremlin militia seeking to liberate Russia from Vladimir Putin, said it had crossed the border and overrun the settlement of Kozinka, while sending units into the town of Grayvoron in Russia’s Belgorod region. Another anti-Kremlin militia, the Russian Volunteer Corps, which is led by a prominent Russian nationalist, also said it had taken part in the raid.
The Russian Defense Ministry has claimed that Russian troops have taken control of the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut. It said that as a result of offensive actions by Wagner assault units, supported by artillery and aviation of the Southern Group of Forces, the liberation of Artyomovsk has been completed, referring to Bakhmut by its Soviet-era name. Earlier on Saturday, the head of the Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, had also reported the capture of Bakhmut. Bakhmut, which is located in Ukraine's Donetsk province, has been the site of fierce fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces for months. Russia controls around half of the province and claimed to have annexed it in the autumn of 2022. But Kyiv has disputed the Russian claims and has said that Bakhmut has not fallen into the hands of Russians.
