Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick says net migration is “far too high” after newly published figures for 2022 showed around 606,000 more people are estimated to have moved to the UK than have left. The Office for National Statistics said factors contributing to relatively high levels of immigration over the past 18 months include people coming to the UK from non-EU countries for work, study, and for humanitarian purposes, including those arriving from Ukraine and Hong Kong. Two Baltic NATO members, Estonia and Latvia, are all set to begin negotiations to purchase the medium-range IRIS-T SLM defense system from its German manufacturer very soon. Both countries, which border Russia, have greatly increased their defense budgets since Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February last year. Neither of the nations possess an air force… and both have to heavily rely on NATO to patrol their airspace. Deliveries of the system, manufactured by weapons maker Diehl Defence, could begin next year and possibly become operational in 2025. If the deal goes ahead, it would be the biggest defense cooperation project ever concluded between Tallin and Riga, according to the Estonian Defense Minister. The two nations hope to finalize the contract and make an official announcement by this summer. No details on the number of systems or on the price were revealed, but the Defence Minister have indicated that the purchase would cost hundreds of millions of euros.

The Russian Defense Ministry has claimed that Russian troops have taken control of the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut. It said that as a result of offensive actions by Wagner assault units, supported by artillery and aviation of the Southern Group of Forces, the liberation of Artyomovsk has been completed, referring to Bakhmut by its Soviet-era name. Earlier on Saturday, the head of the Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, had also reported the capture of Bakhmut. Bakhmut, which is located in Ukraine's Donetsk province, has been the site of fierce fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces for months. Russia controls around half of the province and claimed to have annexed it in the autumn of 2022. But Kyiv has disputed the Russian claims and has said that Bakhmut has not fallen into the hands of Russians.

The Indian Air Force has decided to ground the entire fleet of its Mig 21s as as the investigations into the May 8 crash are still underway and the reason behind the crash is being probed. 3 civilians were killed after the wreckage of a MiG-21 fighter jet fell on a house on May 8 in Rajasthan while the pilot ejected safely, sustaining minor injuries. Air Force officials say that the grounding is a routine procedure that is undertaken after any such tragic incidents…and that the fleets would be back in action after the checks are done. The IAF has already constituted a Court of Inquiry to ascertain the cause of Rajasthan accident. Mig stands for Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau of the erstwhile Soviet Union and it is a supersonic fighter jet. Since its initial induction in 1963, India has inducted over 900 MiG-21s. Up until the first half of 2022, the IAF operated four squadrons of MiG-21 Bison fighters, each squadron comprising around 16 to 18 aircraft. This made the total strength of MiG-21 Bisons between 64 and 72. But on 30th September last year, the Indian Air Force retired the No. 51 ‘swordarms’ MiG-21 fighter Squadron based in Srinagar.

In a major boost to beef up Ukraine’s air defence capabilities due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, the US has now said it will allow its Western allies to supply Ukraine with advanced fighter jets, including American-made F-16s. National security adviser Jake Sullivan said that President Joe Biden has already "informed his G7 counterparts" of the decision at the bloc's summit in Hiroshima yesterday. US troops will also train Kyiv's pilots to use these advanced jets. Although it seems increasingly likely that Ukraine will eventually receive the advanced jets it so desperately wants, no government has so far confirmed it will send them to Kyiv. Countries can only resell or re-export American military hardware if the US approves it, so this decision actually clears the way for other nations to send their existing stocks of F-16s to Ukraine. The US had been sceptical about providing Ukraine with modern fighter jets…worrying that this decision might be seen as its direct involvement in the war. Its focus has instead been on providing military support on land. Ukraine has long sought advanced jets and President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the move as a "historic decision".
