Tens of thousands of people rallied in the Moldovan capital yesterday in support of closer ties to the European Union, as Moldova's pro-European government continues struggles with political crosscurrents from Russia.
Police estimated turnout at around 75,000 people.
Yesterdayâs event, pushed by President Maia Sandu, drew criticism from some opposition parties and even some pro-European lawmakers, who said it was an improper use of government resources.
Sanduâs pro-Western government had previously accused Russia of stoking tensions by supporting Moldova's pro-Russian opposition Sor party.

Ireland's Taoiseach MicheĂĄl Martin called the situation in Gaza âhell on earthâ. He told The Europe Conversation that Israel is committing war crimes, and criticised the EUâs lack of response. Food and medicine have been blocked from entering the besieged area for almost 60 days.
