'Volt Typhoon': Microsoft says this China-sponsored group behind cyber attacks in USA |Oneindia News
Microsoft has claimed that a Chinese cyberespionage group has been targeting critical infrastructure organizations across the United States…including Guam, an island hosting multiple military bases, since at least mid-2021.
Experts say it's one of the largest known cyber espionage campaigns against the US.
The attack was reportedly carried out by China's state-sponsored cyber group "Volt Typhoon” and the attacks relied on "living-off-the-land techniques".
This involved hackers infiltrating local networks to modify their tools and issue commands, while remaining largely undetected.
Their targets and breached entities span a wide range of critical sectors, including government, maritime, communications, manufacturing, information technology, utilities, transportation, construction, and education.
Together with the Five Eyes alliance - comprising the intelligence agencies of the US, Australia, Britain, New Zealand and Canada - Microsoft had published details of the cyber-espionage attacks this past Wednesday.
Iran has launched a missile strike on Be’er Sheva, directly targeting what it claims is a Microsoft office embedded in Israel’s top cyber-military infrastructure. The attack follows a prior strike on Soroka Hospital, as Tehran escalates pressure on what it calls “aggression-supporting” entities. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claim the targeted site is part of an IDF-linked intelligence and AI network. Israeli officials report no fatalities, but the impact on tech and defense collaborations could be massive. Who really works inside this cyber zone? Al-Awlaki urged Muslims to revive the "tradition of assassinations," describing it as the "greatest form of Jihad today." He said the targets should be the "leaders of apostasy," whom he labeled "Jewish Arabs," specifically naming the leaders of Egypt, Jordan, and the Gulf states.
He appealed directly to military personnel in Arab countries, calling on them to take action. He said Arab pilots should strike "the Jews," U.S. military bases in the region, and American aircraft carriers. At the very least, he said, they should attack the palaces of Arab leaders, describing these as the "initial steps" that must be taken.
Al-Awlaki claimed there are 4.5 million Muslims in the United States and said that they should carry out acts of retaliation without hesitation, stating: "Do not consult anyone about killing infidel Americans." Speaking over images of Manhattan skyscrapers, he said that the list of targets should be "effective," and declared: "There are no red lines."
