Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced the departure of the defence minister Oleksiy Reznikov, calling for "new approaches" a year and a half into Russia's invasion.
The announcement came hours after Ukraine fought off an attack by Russian drones in the southern Odesa region early yesterday that hit a Danube port on the border with NATO member Romania.
In his nightly televised address to the nation yesterday, Zelenskyy said that the minister will be relieved of his duties this week His removal comes in the wake of a number of corruption scandals involving Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense.
Infact, Zelensky’s promise to rid the government of corruption was one of the reasons behind his rapid ascent into power in 2019.
Now, Zelenskyy has nominated Rustem Umerov, the former people’s deputy of Ukraine, to become the new defense minister.
U.S President Donald Trump has hinted he may fly to Turkey later this week to join the high-stakes peace talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. With ceasefire hopes hanging in the balance, Trump says he “might be there” if his presence can help broker a deal. The potential visit could mark a major turning point in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, as Trump pushes for a breakthrough in negotiations.
