Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Friday as he wrapped up a three-day visit to China dominated by contentious issues and warnings from his hosts of another “downward spiral” in relations. The two met Friday afternoon local time at the Great Hall of the People, an ornate and cavernous building next to Tiananmen Square. Blinken told Xi that President Joe Biden had sent him to China to “seek to deepen areas of cooperation as well as to responsibly manage the differences that we have.” Xi noted that this year is the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and China, and said the two countries “should be partners rather than adversaries.”

On Saturday, the Oklahoma State Patrol announced the closure of a highway south of Sallisaw following a barge collision with a bridge over the Arkansas River. Troopers took action around 1:25 pm upon receiving reports of the incident, redirecting traffic away from the affected area, according to state patrol spokesperson Sarah Stewart. The bridge, spanning the Arkansas River at its entry into the Robert S. Kerr Reservoir will stay shut until inspection can be conducted, Stewart added.

NBC reports that the East Coast of the United States
was struck by an earthquake on April 5
which was felt from Maryland to Maine.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey,
the earthquake struck just before 10:30 a.m. local
time and was measured at a 4.8-magnitude. .
There were no initial reports
of any major damage.
According to New York Governor
Kathy Hochul, the quake could
be felt across the state. .

Authority Transit Corp. suspended service
between Pennsylvania and New Jersey. .

Meanwhile, New York’s Metropolitan Transportation
Authority said service would not be impacted by the quake,
and teams would be inspecting train lines for damage.
