Israel strikes deep inside Lebanon, targets Iran-backed Hezbollah's training camp | Oneindia News
Just hours following Hezbollah's claim of downing an Israeli drone over Lebanon, reports emerged of Israeli airstrikes hitting the Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon in the early hours of April 4.
According to sources within Lebanese security forces, the strikes specifically targeted a Hezbollah training camp situated in Janta village near the Syrian border.
Although casualties were not confirmed, one of the strikes was reported to have struck Safri town, near the city of Baalbek in the east.
Six Lebanese soldiers were killed on Saturday in a powerful explosion at a Hezbollah weapons depot in Wadi Zibqin, near the Israeli border. The Lebanese army said troops were dismantling munitions from the Iran-backed groupâs facility when the blast occurred. The tragedy comes just days after Beirut announced a plan to disarm Hezbollah by yearâs end under heavy U.S. pressure, a move strongly opposed by both Hezbollah and Iran.
UN peacekeepers recently uncovered fortified tunnels and large weapons caches in the same area. The incident underscores the volatile climate in southern Lebanon despite last yearâs ceasefire with Israel, which mandated that only Lebanese state forces hold arms. Israeli strikes on Hezbollah targets have continued, further inflaming tensions. Investigations are underway into the cause of the deadly blast as leaders mourn the fallen soldiers.
