Ukraine to receive US-made Patriot air defence systems via NATO, Trump says

The United States has confirmed it is sending another Patriot air defense system to Ukraine to help the war-torn nation counter Russia's escalating aerial assaults. This decision comes as former President Donald Trump issued a strong statement, bashing Russian President Vladimir Putin for his aggressive military strategy. For months, Ukraine has pleaded for more advanced air defense, as the previous freeze in U.S. military aid allowed Russian warplanes to dominate the skies and launch devastating strikes with ballistic missiles like the Iskander and the hypersonic Kinzhal.
The Patriot system is considered Ukraine's only reliable and effective shield against these specific high-speed threats. Its advanced radar and PAC-3 MSE interceptors are critical for protecting high-value targets, including the capital city of Kyiv, and vital energy infrastructure that Russia has systematically targeted. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that Ukraine needs more of these systems, as the current six to eight units leave vast areas of the country exposed to Russian attacks.
However, the deployment is not without risks. Each Patriot missile costs between $2-4 million, and Russia actively targets these valuable systems on the battlefield. The U.S. itself has a limited global inventory of Patriot units, balancing urgent requests from Ukraine with strategic commitments to allies in the Middle East and the South China Sea. This deployment signals a critical phase in the Russia-Ukraine war, testing both Ukrainian resilience and American strategic resolve.

Russia has launched over 100 drones and missiles in a coordinated overnight assault across Ukraine — striking major cities including Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, and more. Russia has confirmed the burial of Colonel Sergei Ilyin, commander of the 155th Marine Brigade, days after reports emerged of a Ukrainian HIMARS strike that allegedly killed him along with 21 others at a command post in Kursk Oblast. Independent outlet Astra cites officials in Chuvash Republic, although the cause of death remains undisclosed. The same attack reportedly killed Major General Mikhail Gudkov.
The 155th Brigade has long been accused of war crimes in Bucha and Irpin, heightening the symbolic weight of Ilyin’s death. Ukrainian officials have not officially commented. Kyiv’s broader cross-border campaign in Kursk Oblast, launched in 2024, has claimed tens of thousands of Russian casualties.
