Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has signed a landmark agreement with Iraq to combat people smuggling and strengthen border security.
Made during a three-day visit to Baghdad and Erbil, the deal is the largest operational effort against organised crime between the two nations.
Cooper, the first UK Government secretary of state to visit Iraq since 2021, was joined by new border security chief Martin Hewitt for meetings with Iraqi and Kurdish officials.

Following the Arab League Summit in Baghdad, Hamas fiercely criticized Arab leaders for failing to take meaningful action as Israelâs assault on Gaza intensified. The group demanded enforcement of Riyadh resolutions, lifting of the blockade, and sanctions on Israel. Citing massacres in northern Gaza that coincided with the summit, Hamas stressed the need for urgent global solidarity. Other resistance factions echoed similar sentiments, condemning Arab regimes for hollow statements and complicity in genocide. The factions emphasized that real intervention, not symbolism, is urgently needed to halt the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

The 34th Arab League Summit in Baghdad is dominated by Gazaâs unfolding humanitarian catastrophe. Iraqâs PM labelled Israelâs actions âgenocide,â pledging $40 million for Gaza and Lebanonâs reconstruction. The summit follows President Trumpâs controversial Gaza remarks during his Middle East tour. Leaders including Mahmoud Abbas and UN chief Guterres demand an immediate ceasefire, aid access, and legal accountability. Spain announced plans to push the ICC to examine Israelâs compliance with aid delivery laws, intensifying diplomatic pressure. A unified Arab plan calls for Gazaâs rebuilding without displacing its 2.4 million residents.

During his visit to Saudi Arabia, President Trump met with Syriaâs new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, marking the first such meeting in 25 years. Trump urged Syria to join the Abraham Accords with Israel, expel foreign militants, and take control of ISIS camps run by Kurdish forces. In return, Trump announced the lifting of crippling U.S. sanctions, offering Syria a chance at economic recovery. The Syrian foreign ministry hailed the meeting as "historic," though the normalization with Israel was not addressed. Crowds in Damascus celebrated the U.S. decision, though the future remains uncertain.
