Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has sparked political shockwaves by refusing to sign the EU’s joint statement backing Ukraine, issued just days before the upcoming Trump–Putin meeting in Alaska. The statement, agreed upon by other EU leaders, emphasized that international borders cannot be changed by force and that peace in Ukraine must include Ukraine’s voice. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is facing intense criticism after allegedly caving to Donald Trump’s aggressive trade demands out of fear that the U.S. might slash military support to Ukraine or withdraw troops from Europe. According to the Sunday Times, von der Leyen accepted a harsh 15% tariff on most EU exports during a visit to Trump’s golf course in Scotland—scrapping a counter-tariff plan her officials had prepared.
Brussels also pledged $600 billion in U.S. investments and $750 billion in American energy purchases. Leaders like Macron and Orban slammed the deal, with the latter claiming Trump “ate her for breakfast.” Backlash is growing in the EU, where von der Leyen faces rebellion over military spending, vaccine scandals, and dwindling parliamentary support.
