Speaker turns on Big Ben's light to mark WW2's end
The speaker of the House of Commons turned on Big Ben's symbolic light as part of the VE Day anniversary celebrations.
Sir Lindsay Hoyle replicated former speaker Douglas Clifton Brown who switched on the light at the top of Big Ben in 1945, which symbolised the end of the blackouts in London during the Second World War.

An explosion at Japan’s Kadena Air Base in Okinawa injured four Japanese Self-Defense Force (SDF) personnel during WWII ordnance disposal on Monday. The blast occurred inside the U.S.-controlled base, though no American personnel were hurt. The injuries are not life-threatening. Japan’s 15th Brigade was handling unexploded ammunition at the time. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area as investigations continue. Kadena, the largest U.S. airbase in the Asia-Pacific, plays a key strategic role near Taiwan.

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused the UK of playing a direct role in Ukraine’s alleged terrorist attacks inside Russia. Speaking at the 'Forum of the Future 2050' in Moscow, Lavrov said Ukraine would be “helpless” without British assistance, citing deadly sabotage incidents and coordinated drone strikes across Russian territory. Lavrov claimed the U.S. has pulled back, leaving Britain “100%” involved.
