Speaker turns on Big Ben's light to mark WW2's end
The speaker of the House of Commons turned on Big Ben's symbolic light as part of the VE Day anniversary celebrations.
Sir Lindsay Hoyle replicated former speaker Douglas Clifton Brown who switched on the light at the top of Big Ben in 1945, which symbolised the end of the blackouts in London during the Second World War.

In a move set to escalate the conflict, the United States has approved the sale of 3,350 air-launched ERAM cruise missiles to Ukraine, according to the Wall Street Journal. With a range of up to 280 miles, the missiles could enable Kyiv to strike deep into Russian territory. Deliveries are expected by the end of 2025, though some shipments may arrive in just six weeks. Reports indicate Ukraine will need Pentagon approval before launching the weapons. President Donald Trump, who previously criticized unconditional aid to Kyiv, recently warned Ukraine has “no chance of winning” without long-range strike capability. NATO allies, especially France and Germany, are backing further weapons deliveries as part of post-war security guarantees, even as Russia insists Western military aid blocks peace. The missile deal highlights the growing stakes in Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II.
