Big Ben light switched on to mark end of WWII blackouts
On Thursday evening, Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle turned on the Ayrton Light above Big Ben to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War blackouts.

In a move set to escalate the conflict, the United States has approved the sale of 3,350 air-launched ERAM cruise missiles to Ukraine, according to the Wall Street Journal. With a range of up to 280 miles, the missiles could enable Kyiv to strike deep into Russian territory. Deliveries are expected by the end of 2025, though some shipments may arrive in just six weeks. Reports indicate Ukraine will need Pentagon approval before launching the weapons. President Donald Trump, who previously criticized unconditional aid to Kyiv, recently warned Ukraine has âno chance of winningâ without long-range strike capability. NATO allies, especially France and Germany, are backing further weapons deliveries as part of post-war security guarantees, even as Russia insists Western military aid blocks peace. The missile deal highlights the growing stakes in Europeâs deadliest conflict since World War II.
