Big Ben light switched on to mark end of WWII blackouts
On Thursday evening, Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle turned on the Ayrton Light above Big Ben to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War blackouts.
In peacetime, the lantern light always shone out after sunset in order to show that the House of Commons was at work.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle replicated former speaker Douglas Clifton Brown who switched on the light at the top of Big Ben in 1945, which symbolised the end of the blackouts in London during the Second World War. An explosion at Japan’s Kadena Air Base in Okinawa injured four Japanese Self-Defense Force (SDF) personnel during WWII ordnance disposal on Monday. The blast occurred inside the U.S.-controlled base, though no American personnel were hurt. The injuries are not life-threatening. Japan’s 15th Brigade was handling unexploded ammunition at the time. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area as investigations continue. Kadena, the largest U.S. airbase in the Asia-Pacific, plays a key strategic role near Taiwan.
