Pope Leo XIV has offered the Vatican as a venue for peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, following the failed negotiations in Istanbul where Putin was notably absent. The Vatican called Putinās no-show ātragicā and reaffirmed its openness to mediation. Cardinal Parolin acknowledged the difficulty of the situation but stressed the Holy Seeās readiness. In a major overnight assault on May 15ā16, Russia launched 112 dronesāincluding Shahed modelsāat Ukraine, striking multiple regions. Ukraineās air defense systems shot down 73 UAVs, but the attack still caused damage across Odesa, Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, and Chernihiv. The drones were launched from Bryansk, Kursk, and Millerovo. Ukrainian aircraft, missile units, and electronic warfare systems responded to the coordinated drone swarm. While 36 decoy drones vanished from radar, the repeated strikes continue to threaten both civilian infrastructure and military targets across Ukraine.
