Home Secretary Yvette Cooper says the fall in net migration "is important and welcome” but admits the government needs to go “significantly further”.
The figure stood at an estimated 431,000 in the year ending December 2024, down 49.9% from 860,000 a year earlier, the Office for National Statistics said.

Yvette Cooper said she is "really worried about" increasing levels of extremism amongst young people in the country.
Asked about the issue in the Home Affairs Committee, the home secretary said: "I see it in the kinds of cases that I'm briefed on, just increasing numbers of teenagers - where there are serious concerns."

The shadow business minister has claimed the government has "lost control" as record numbers of migrants crossed the channel this weekend. More than 1,100 migrants arrived in the UK after crossing the English Channel on Saturday, the highest number recorded so far in 2025.
