Grooming gangs: Why has a public inquiry been announced now?
Yvette Cooper has revealed the findings of a review into child sex abuse by grooming gangs to MPs.
The home secretary said Baroness Louise Casey’s review into child sex abuse by grooming gangs found suspects were often "disproportionately likely" to be Asian men.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer commissioned Baroness Casey to carry out an audit into the nature and scale of child sexual abuse in January, following months of pressure from his political opponents, and even tech billionaire Elon Musk.

Police in England and Wales to collect ethnicity data in child sexual abuse cases
The announcement follows a series of recommendations by Baroness Casey made in her audit on 'grooming gangs', which found that Asian men were overrepresented in three local areas – but more data was needed to gain a national picture.

The shadow home secretary also claims the prime minister only announced the national inquiry after being “dragged kicking and screaming” by Baroness Casey’s report into child sexual exploitation. A diplomatic showdown has erupted between India and Elon Musk-owned platform 'X' (formerly Twitter). 'X' alleged that the Indian government ordered the blocking of over 2,300 accounts—including global outlets like Reuters. India denied the claim, calling it “false and misleading,” and revealed it had demanded restoration, not blocking. X delayed action for 21+ hours. With press freedom now in question and legal remedies suggested without cause, critics ask: Is X deliberately maligning India on the global stage?
