All pupils in England whose families claim universal credit will be eligible for free school meals under an expansion plan announced by the government on Wednesday.
Hundreds of thousands more children across the country will be able to access means-tested free school meals when the provision is extended from September 2026, the Department for Education (DfE) has said. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said the announcement "is a game changer for families - half a million children will benefit".

A memorial service was held at St Paul's Cathedral to mark the 20th anniversary of the 7/7 London bombings which killed 52 people and injuring hundreds more. Addressing the attendees of the service, the Dean of St Paul's Cathedral Andrew Tremlett said: "We come to honour the memory of those who died, to stand by the survivors and to give thanks to those who responded with courage and compassion."
