French oyster sales clam up as contamination scare spreads

IndiaTimes Wednesday, 3 January 2024
French oyster sales plummeted due to a health scare caused by the norovirus in oysters from Arcachon Bay. Local authorities banned the harvesting and sale of oysters from the affected area, leading to an economic crisis in the oyster industry. The contamination was a result of flooding in waste water treatment plants, which contaminated the oysters. Oyster farmers stress that the issue stems from insufficient waste water treatment capacity, and they are victims of under-investment in water facilities.
