Arjun Rampal's casting as the antagonist Mukesh Mehra in "Om Shanti Om" was a challenging decision for director Farah Khan, who sought a conventionally handsome actor to rival Shah Rukh Khan's charisma. Originally, Vivek Oberoi was considered for the role, but negotiations failed, leading to Arjun's selection. Despite initial doubts, Shah Rukh Khan convinced Arjun to take on the role, which earned him rave reviews. "Om Shanti Om" became a massive success in Shah Rukh Khan's career, grossing over Rs 100 crore in India.
