Man dies of kala-azar at Kolkata hospital, 1st death this yr

A 47-year-old man from Bihar died from kala-azar in Kolkata, marking the first death from the disease in Bengal this year. The patient had been visiting family and was admitted to a hospital after experiencing recurrent fever. Kala-azar, a slow-progressing disease caused by protozoan parasites, is endemic in certain areas of Bengal but not in Kolkata. While the disease can be fatal if not promptly detected and treated, the government provides effective medications to combat it. This is the first kala-azar death in Bengal in a year.
