In African savannah, human voices scare mammals more than lions’ roar: Study

IndiaTimes Friday, 6 October 2023
A groundbreaking study conducted by Western University biologist Liana Zanette and lion expert Craig Packer reveals that humans are the "super predator" that instills fear in nearly all mammal species in South Africa's Greater Kruger National Park. The research found that wildlife in the area was twice as likely to flee and abandon waterholes upon hearing human voices compared to lions or other hunting sounds. This fear of humans can have dramatic ecological consequences and poses a new challenge for wildlife conservation efforts. Even benign humans, such as wildlife tourists, can induce fear in wildlife.
