Bengaluru cracker godown blaze: No fire extinguishers or exits; owner had no permission to store crackers
Monday, 9 October 2023
A firecracker godown in Bengaluru caught fire due to a lack of fire safety measures. The building did not have fire exits, fire extinguishers, or fire alarms. The owner had illegally stored large quantities of crackers, even though their license was only for possession and sale. The government had negligently renewed the license despite past violations. The workers, mostly students from Tamil Nadu, were paid daily wages and accommodation. The owner had not obtained necessary no-objection certificates from relevant departments.
