Punjab farm fires so far lowest in at least 12 years but next few wks crucial

IndiaTimes Friday, 27 October 2023
The number of crop fires in Punjab, a major contributor to air pollution in the region, has been lower this year compared to previous years. However, there is concern that the late harvest and peak stubble-burning period around Diwali could lead to a decline in air quality. Punjab has accounted for over 70% of crop-burning incidents in northern states, including Haryana, UP, Rajasthan, and MP. The fires typically peak between November 1 and 10, and with the delayed harvest, there is a potential for higher pollution levels.
