'It could mean anything': Mizoram CM Zoramthanga on high voter turnout
Wednesday, 8 November 2023 Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga has said that despite inadequate police and armed forces deployment, the state assembly elections were conducted peacefully. He stated that even the presence of a single policeman in a polling booth is enough to ensure peaceful elections in Mizoram. The Chief Minister also mentioned that due to issues with electronic voting machines, polling in some seats continued until 9 pm, but he estimated the voter turnout to be close to 80%. He emphasized that the high voter turnout does not necessarily indicate an inclination for change in the ruling party.
Polling in 102 parliamentary seats across 21 states and Union Territories in the first phase of Lok Sabha Elections commenced at 7 am on April 19 and ended at 6 pm. Over 102 parliamentary constituencies in 21 states and union territories headed to the polling booth on Friday, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. West Bengal recorded the highest turnout till 5 PM at 77.57 per cent, followed by Tripura at 76.10 per cent. Voter turnout in Assam stood at 70.77 per cent, while Manipur recorded a voter turnout of 68.58 per cent till 5 PM.
