AQI shoots up to 'severe' as Delhi has a blast on Diwali
Monday, 13 November 2023 () Despite the Supreme Court's ban on firecrackers, Delhi and the rest of NCR saw a significant increase in pollution levels during Diwali. The PM2.5 levels rose dramatically, breaching national safety and WHO standards. The pollution was attributed to emissions from firecrackers, stubble burning, and adverse meteorological conditions. Although this year recorded the second lowest Air Quality Index (AQI) on the day after Diwali since 2015, 21 out of 24 stations witnessed higher PM2.5 concentration compared to the previous year.
The air quality in Delhi and nearby cities reached hazardous levels a day after Diwali with the widespread violation of the firecracker ban across the National Capital Region (NCR) on Sunday raising pollution concerns.

The Post-Diwali Pollution is a toxic. A thick toxic haze or 'smog' returned to Delhi, Noida, Gurugram and surrounding places a day after Diwali in India. This is a common affair after people burst crackers on Diwali night. This time around it was a clear violation of the Supreme Court's ban order, leading to heavy pollution all across the National Capital Region – which has been already battling with its deteriorating air quality.
