India should avoid promoting the sale of SUVs due to the serious risks they pose to pedestrians. SUVs have higher bonnet or hood heights, increasing the risk of fatalities in crashes. The car industry's push for larger and heavier SUVs is detrimental to road safety, especially for smaller and more efficient vehicles and vulnerable road users. India has seen a significant increase in SUV sales, comprising half of annual passenger car sales. It is crucial for the government to discourage the sale of these vehicles and prioritize road safety.
