New Indian Penal Code has become more draconian: P Chidambaram
President Droupadi Murmu has given assent to three new criminal justice bills, replacing colonial-era laws. Congress leader P Chidambaram criticizes the new laws, calling the Indian Penal Code more draconian and urging the successor government in 2024 to review and remove the oppressive provisions. Chidambaram argues that the new Criminal Procedure Code contains unconstitutional provisions that restrict freedom and personal liberty. The bills redefine offences, abolish sedition as a crime, and introduce a section on offences against the state.
