2023 crime file: Murders most foul expose ‘modern Malayali’ facade

IndiaTimes Friday, 29 December 2023
Honour killings and crimes in the name of superstitious beliefs have exposed the fragility of society's progress. Recent incidents, such as the murder of Kevin Joseph and the killing of Fathima for her friendship with a boy from a different faith, highlight the deep fault lines in society. Despite recognition by the Supreme Court and advisories from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Kerala has not implemented concrete measures to address these issues. The lack of specific laws, such as the Kerala Exploitation by Superstition (Prevention) Act, and unsuccessful attempts, like the private member bill against black magic, demonstrate the need for stronger deterrents.
