Centre: 4500 civilians among 10000 killed in Ulfa violence in 44 yrs

IndiaTimes Friday, 29 December 2023
Ulfa, an armed secessionist group, has existed for 44 years and caused cycles of violence in Assam resulting in approximately 10,000 deaths. The Centre and state government recently signed a peace deal with Ulfa's pro-talks faction, resolving the armed movement. The casualty count includes civilians, security forces, and Ulfa members killed in counter-insurgency operations. Ulfa's actions included abductions, killings of hostages, and infamous incidents like the assassination of Surrendra Paul and the killing of schoolchildren in an IED blast. After expressing willingness to start talks, the outfit apologized for these killings.
