Darjeeling toy train carrying tourists goes off tracks

IndiaTimes Tuesday, 2 January 2024
A steam loco of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railways (DHR) was derailed at Mary Villa Kakjhora in Darjeeling. This is the third time that a DHR loco went off the tracks, officials said. CPRO Northeast Frontier Railways Sabyasachi De confirmed that there was no casualty. The derailed steam engine was part of the joy ride services between Darjeeling and Ghum. There were 59 passengers on board the two coaches, but none were injured. The recovery van has reached the spot. The DHR operates 12 joy ride services, which will be reduced by January 5 as tourist numbers decrease. Among the eight services, four will be hauled by diesel engines and four by steam. Apu Roy, a tourist from Burdwan, expressed being shaken by the sudden derailment, but confirmed that his family is fine.
