Will decide what is good for country: Supreme Court on GM mustard
Wednesday, 17 January 2024
Observing that the issue of genetically modified crops is very technical and scientific, SC on Wednesday said it will decide a plea on environmental release of GM mustard on the basis of what is good for the country, while also making it clear that the court cannot go into a scientific debate on the issue because of its lack of expertise on the subject. A bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and Sanjay Karol also expressed its concern about the present practice of using excessive amounts of chemical fertilisers and farmers renouncing the practice of using traditional and organic fertilisers.
