Retain criminal defamation as offence: Law Commission

IndiaTimes Saturday, 3 February 2024
The Law Commission recommended to the government the retention of criminal defamation as an offense within the framework of criminal laws. The commission asserted that the law recognizes the harm to reputation not merely as an assault on an individual but as an imputation on society as a whole. It emphasized that the wrongdoer may be penalized to contribute to the community's well-being, aligning with the principles introduced in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
