In SC, government praises PV Narasimha Rao, Manmohan Singh for ending ‘licence raj’, opening economy
Tuesday, 16 April 2024 () The BJP-led NDA government praised former PM Narasimha Rao and his finance minister Manmohan Singh for their role in economic liberalization in 1991. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta highlighted their efforts in the Supreme Court, stating that while many laws were liberalized, the Industry (Development and Regulation) Act, 1951, remained unchanged, giving the government overarching control over industries.
In a landmark decision, a seven-judge bench of the Supreme Court ruled that lawmakers, comprising both Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs), can be prosecuted under the Prevention of Corruption Act if they accept monetary gains in exchange for their votes or speeches in Parliament or state assemblies. This ruling overturns the previous 1998 judgement of the apex court in the PV Narasimha Rao case. An MP/MLA can't claim immunity from prosecution on a charge of bribery in connection with the vote or speech in the legislative house”(DISPLAY ON SCREEN) ruled the seven-judge bench.
