3 decades on, Andhra Pradesh removes 2-child norm for civic body polls
Wednesday, 7 August 2024
Andhra Pradesh removed the rule preventing people with more than two children from running in local and civic body elections. The state cabinet changed the 1994 laws to address declining population concerns. The move comes as delimitation, expected in 2026, may reduce Lok Sabha seats in southern states that have successfully controlled their populations, potentially impacting central funds distribution.
