Maharashtra: 3 killed, 9 hospitalised after gas leak at fertiliser plant in Sangli
Friday, 22 November 2024 Sangli Superintendent of Police Sandip Ghuge said the gas is suspected to be ammonia. Seven of the injured persons have been admitted to Sahyadri Hospital in Karad and five of them are in the ICU, said another official.
Seventeen years after the deadly 2008 Malegaon blast rocked Maharashtra, a special NIA court in Mumbai has acquitted all seven accused — including BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt Col Prasad Purohit — citing lack of concrete evidence. The judgment came just one day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah told the Rajya Sabha that "no Hindu can ever be a terrorist." The court emphasized that terrorism has no religion and that justice cannot be based on public perception or moral bias. This landmark verdict reignites debates on communal narratives, judicial process, and political influence in terror trials.

India has crossed 7,000 active COVID-19 cases, with Kerala reporting the highest spike and three new deaths. The XFG variant, a sub-lineage of Omicron with strong immune evasion, has been detected across the country, raising global alarm. Originating in Canada, the variant carries four spike protein mutations. Globally, SARS-CoV-2 activity is rising, especially in South-East Asia and Eastern Mediterranean regions, with test positivity rates matching last year’s peak. WHO continues to monitor the spread amid poor ICU and hospitalization data from heavily affected regions.
