5,800 Himalaya rock glaciers store water equal to several lakes
Wednesday, 19 March 2025 Researchers from IISER Pune, University of Kashmir, and IIT Bombay and Roorkee, among others, studied 5,807 rock glaciers in the western Himalayas. They found that most of these glaciers contain significant ice and show movement. These glaciers, crucial for maintaining consistent streamflow in the region, hold an estimated 13.7 cubic km of water. Rising temperatures endanger these vital hydrological reservoirs.
