Pope Francis' funeral mass began with the Prayer of the Faithful, delivered by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re. In a significant departure from past papal funerals, the prayer was recited in six languages: Italian, French, Arabic, Portuguese, Polish, German, and for the first time, Mandarin. The inclusion of Mandarin reflects Pope Francis’ efforts to build bridges with China, especially after his visit to Mongolia in 2023. Cardinal Agostino Liu Bo delivered the prayer in Mandarin, invoking the hope that Christ calls all faithful to His kingdom.
