Bangladesh plan to redefine ‘muktijoddha’ yet again stirs a debate in West Bengal
Wednesday, 26 March 2025 Deliberations are underway in Kolkata to redefine the term 'bir muktijoddha' to only include battlefield fighters and classify others as 'Liberation War Associates'. This proposal has sparked debates and raised concerns about the recognition and possible ignoring of genuine freedom fighters and the distorting of historical contributions.
Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to six months in jail by the International Crimes Tribunal for contempt of court. The verdict comes after a leaked audio call revealed Hasina allegedly mocking the judiciary and referencing a “license to kill” 227 people during the 2024 protests. The sentencing marks the first official ruling since her ouster and escape last year following mass student-led demonstrations. Former student leader Shamil Bulbul was also sentenced to two months. Defense lawyers call the charges politically motivated, while prosecutors hint at more charges to come.
