Tuesday, 1 April 2025 The Gujarat High Court has upheld the acquittal of six individuals accused of killing three British nationals of Indian origin during the 2002 riots. India has slammed the European Union's latest round of sanctions that target Nayara Energy’s Gujarat-based Vadinar refinery for its links to Russian oil giant Rosneft. As part of its 14th package of sanctions, the EU blacklisted 105 additional vessels and took aim at Nayara — the first Indian entity to face such direct action.
Brussels aims to throttle Moscow’s wartime funding, but New Delhi has accused the EU of "double standards" and reiterated its stance against unilateral sanctions. Nayara, heavily reliant on export markets in Europe and Africa, now faces disruptions, job threats, and uncertainty over Rosneft’s $20B stalled exit plan involving Reliance. India says it remains committed to its legal obligations but won’t compromise on energy security.

Fresh controversy has erupted over the fatal Air India crash in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad last month. A Wall Street Journal report claims a cockpit recording reveals the captain cut off the aircraft’s fuel midair, moments after takeoff. The first officer, reportedly panicked, questioned the captain’s move, as per the leaked cockpit transcript. Both pilots, Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and First Officer Clive Kunder, were killed along with 240 others onboard and 19 on the ground—only one person survived. While the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau's (AIIB) preliminary report confirms both fuel switches were turned off within a second, it doesn’t state whether the action was accidental or deliberate. India’s Civil Aviation Minister urged restraint, saying no conclusions should be drawn yet. The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) has strongly condemned the US media report, calling it speculative and harmful. Meanwhile, Air India completed checks on the Fuel Control Switches in all Boeing 787s with no issues found.
