Eye on China, India inks SL deal for energy hub in Trincomalee
Saturday, 5 April 2025 Prime Minister Modi's visit to Sri Lanka led to a tripartite agreement involving the UAE to develop Trincomalee as an energy hub. The project aims to enhance Sri Lanka's energy security and economy. This move counters China's significant investments in the region.

South China Sea Breaking: In a significant escalation of defensive capabilities, Taiwan has officially formed its first combat-ready HIMARS rocket unit. This move is designed to strengthen deterrence against increasing threats and military pressure from China. Taiwan's Defense Minister, Wellington Koo, lauded the new unit as a "significant boost" to the island's defensive power, underscoring the strategic importance of this deployment. The soldiers operating these advanced systems have completed specialized training in the United States, highlighting the close military cooperation between Washington and Taipei.
The M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) is a game-changer for Taiwan's military. It can fire six 227mm rockets or a single Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missile, the latter boasting a range of up to 300 kilometers. This impressive range means that key military and strategic targets deep within mainland China's coastal provinces are now potentially within Taiwan's strike capability. Reports suggest that Taiwan may have already acquired these long-range ATACMS missiles, a detail that is sure to alarm military planners in Beijing.
This deployment is part of a larger arms deal with the U.S., with 11 of a total 29 HIMARS systems already delivered. The move aligns with America's broader strategy to build a strong coalition in the Indo-Pacific to counter China's growing military and economic dominance. While the HIMARS system has proven its devastating effectiveness in the Ukraine conflict, analysts note that China's more advanced air defense systems could pose a greater challenge. The activation of this unit comes as Chinese military aircraft and vessels continue to cross the sensitive median line of the Taiwan Strait, prompting regular intrusion warnings from Taipei and keeping the region on high alert.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, alongside India’s S. Jaishankar, accused the U.S. of weaponizing the dollar and using sanctions as “economic colonialism.” Lavrov warned that even allies are unsafe from Washington’s unpredictability, framing BRICS as a counterbalance to Western dominance. India backed the bloc, stressing it is “not anti-West, just not Western.” With BRICS expanding to include nations like Iran, UAE, and Egypt, the bloc now represents over 40% of the global population, aiming to reshape financial systems, technology, and influence in the Global South.

Vladimir Putin has confirmed that a highly anticipated summit with Donald Trump could take place as early as next week in the UAE, calling it a potential “historical event.” With the U.S. deadline looming for Russia to show progress on ending the Ukraine war, the Kremlin is pushing for a “successful and productive” outcome. However, Kyiv is unlikely to be part of the talks, as Russia dismisses Zelensky's inclusion and continues to label him “illegitimate” due to his expired term.

The UAE has carried out its 61st humanitarian airdrop over Gaza as part of the “Birds of Goodness” mission. Reports claim some containers may have fallen into the sea, triggering further chaos amid desperate conditions. In addition to airlifts, 20 aid trucks were sent into Gaza, where hunger deaths continue to rise. UN agencies report seizures and looting of aid, while Hamas declares it will only allow access to hostages if Israel halts airstrikes and opens corridors. Despite international efforts, the humanitarian crisis shows no sign of easing.

France has launched an airdrop mission delivering 40 tonnes of emergency food aid into Gaza, in a dramatic response to an escalating famine crisis in the embattled Strip. Each of the four flights carried 10 tonnes of supplies, Foreign Minister Jean‑Noël Barrot confirmed—though he warned the gesture remains “insufficient.”
Barrot and President Macron demanded that Israel quickly reopen air, land, and sea routes to allow unhindered aid access, calling current conditions “absolutely intolerable.” A recent WHO report showed that since July, 5,000 children under five have been treated for acute malnutrition, and at least 63 have died of starvation. The move follows weeks of humanitarian pauses and airdrops by allies including Jordan, the UAE, Germany, and the UK—but global agencies warn only sustained land convoys can truly meet the desperate needs. Against the backdrop of rising international pressure and US envoy visits, France’s action adds fresh urgency to the crisis.

After months of silence and worsening famine, Jordan and the UAE have conducted the first Arab airdrop of humanitarian aid into Gaza. As mass starvation grips the enclave, with over 120 deaths from malnutrition—including dozens of children—this airdrop may signal a shift. But with ongoing blockades and a severely restricted flow of supplies, is it too little, too late?
We break down what was delivered, why the crisis escalated, and whether international pressure is finally moving the needle.
